Zoological Garden Alipore, popularly known as Kolkata Zoo or Alipore Zoo, is India’s oldest formally established zoolical park. Established in 1875 and opened to the public in 1876, the zoo spreads across nearly 46 acres in the Alipore area of Kolkata. It is one of the city’s most visited attractions and houses a wide variety of mammals, reptiles, birds, and endangered species. The zoo is especially famous for the legendary Aldabra giant tortoise “Adwaita,” believed to have lived for over 250 years.
