Alipore Zoological Garden, popularly known as Alipore Zoo or Kolkata Zoo, is India’s oldest formally established zoological park. Established on 24 September 1875 and opened to the public in 1876, the zoo spans approximately 19 hectares in the heart of Kolkata. It houses over 1,200 animals representing a wide variety of mammals, birds, reptiles, and endangered species. The zoo is renowned for its conservation programs, educational initiatives, and its historic association with Adwaita, the legendary Aldabra giant tortoise that lived for more than 250 years.
